The 1918 lynching of Mary Turner by a white mob in Brooks County, Georgia, is usually remembered for the horror of an allegedly pregnant woman's murder. Thomas Aiello argues those gruesome details have distracted historians from the larger context. He contends Turner was murdered but not pregnant, and that NAACP investigator Walter White knew this yet obscured the facts because the story was effective. Aiello recasts Turner's killing and broader Brooks County violence as race rioting, fitting just inside the Red Summer wave from East St. Louis in 1917 to Tulsa in 1921, and asks why South Georgia was especially violent in the early twentieth century.
